As this is part of the university network you do not need to use the remote desktop gateway or VPN from here.
Just go to the start-menu and in the Windows Accessories folder there is a link to Remote Desktop Connection.
Open this, and enter one of the machine names from above in the ‘Computer’ field. These should end with uea.ac.uk, e.g. cmpsci-01.uea.ac.uk .
Clicking the ‘Connect’ button should prompt you for your username/password, these are the normal ones you use for logging into the machines physically.
As Remote Desktop has been used in recent attacks we have added an extra layer protection to it.
Before being able to connect you need to first go to https://rdgguard.cmp.uea.ac.uk and log in.
This site uses a separate account from your normal UEA one, and you need to request the account by emailing cmp_support@uea.ac.uk .
You will need a TOTP authenticator app to use this service, these don't communicate with our server and you can use any one you want.
The Microsoft Authenticator used by UEA includes this functionality, so if you already have this installed you can use this.
Name | Play Store | Apple App Store |
Microsoft Authenticator | Play Store | App Store |
Google Authenticator | Play Store | App Store |
Twilio Authy | Play Store | App Store |
Duo Mobile | Play Store | App Store |
LastPass Authenticator | Play Store | App Store |
After passing Remote Desktop Guard you have 5 minutes to start connections.
Once 5 minute have expired you will need to log back in to the guard if you need to re-connect.
First before connecting to a CMP lab PC please pick a number from the list above for the correct lab and add uea.ac.uk to the end, this is to be used in the Remote Desktop Connection configuration.
UG Example - To connect to CMP Sci Lab PC 9 you would use cmpsci-09.uea.ac.uk as the hostname.
AGAC Example - To connect to AGAC Lab PC 2 you would use agaclab-02.uea.ac.uk as the hostname.
2. Next you will need to setup the Remote Desktop Connection the following pages contain the details.
There are also older versions of the guides with screen-shots, the main difference is you need to use cmprdg4.uea.ac.uk, not the server mentioned in them.
3. If you receive the message below when connecting to a Lab PC remotely it means this PC is already in use - please click No so you do not disconnect the existing user, and then choose a different number from the table above.
**There are plenty of machines available so please be patient.
If you find that you are unable to connect to a CMP Remote Lab PC, then please try some of the common fixes stated in this document.
